King Biscuit Time
The annual King Biscuit Blues Festival was founded in 1986 but its roots go all the way back to 1941 and the nation’s longest-running radio show.
“King Biscuit Time,” still broadcast on Helena’s KFFA, debuted in 1941. The show featured live, daily performances by the “King Biscuit Entertainers:” Sonny Boy Williamson II and Robert Lockwood Jr.
The show became soon became legendary in the Delta, inspiring impressionable young listeners like Muddy Waters and B.B. King. Its effects went well beyond the blues, also inspiring the unrelated “King Biscuit Flower Hour” rock-radio show.
King Biscuit Blues Festival 2018
The King Biscuit Blues Festival continues this tradition with 4 days of music by both established and up-and-coming blues performers. The event takes place on 5 stages, near the banks of the Mississippi River, in downtown Helena.
The festival’s best-kept secret,”Warm-Up Wednesday,” extends the event’s official 3 days to 4. This quieter, more laid-back event is a hidden gem for those who arrive a day early.
