Garvan Woodland Gardens is a world-class, botanical garden located on a peninsula extending into Lake Hamilton and frequently described as one of the most beautiful places in Arkansas – especially this time of year! Come see the eye-poppingly gorgeous effect of over 4 million, brilliant bulbs on 17 acres of the University of Arkansas’ Garvan Woodland Gardens, starting November 22nd and running every evening thereafter, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas day, to December 31st, 2014.
Originally cultivated by Verna Cook Garvan, it is hard to envision Garvan Woodland Gardens as the clear-cut property it was in 1915. Purchased by her family in the 1920’s, Verna Cook Garvan put an end to lumber cultivation on the peninsula, envision the land as a botanical garden where she began planning and planting in 1956.
For the next forty years, Verna Cook Garvan brought in plantings of more than 150 different varieties of azaleas – not to mention camellias, magnolias, roses, hydrangeas, and much more. Verna Cook Garvan donated Garvan Woodland Gardens to the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Arkansas at her death, and they’ve continued to maintain and add to the project ever since. Garvan Woodland Gardens now include numerous waterfalls along a winding stream, walkways, stone bridges, a pavilion designed by famed architect E. Faye Jones, a chapel, even a miniature railroad!
Of course, beyond the gardens, the biggest attraction is the annual, Christmas lighting display known as the Garvan Woodland Gardens Holiday Lights! Elaborate, three-dimensional displays and twinkling lights decorate over 17 acres of the gardens, including a 50 foot-tall, musical rose tree, elves working in Santa’s workshop, and a Christmas train! Other features fo the Christmas season are free concerts in the Anthony Chapel, hot cocoa, and Santa visits from 6:30pm -7:30pm at the pavilion on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in December.
