If you’re a fan of airplanes and or military history, you owe it to yourself to visit the Arkansas Air & Military Museum in Fayetteville, Arkansas – even the hangar it’s housed in is unique and historic!
Located at Fayetteville’s Drake Field, the Arkansas Air & Military Museum is housed in an all-wood hangar – all wood because it was constructed during World War II and wartime restrictions didn’t allow for the use of more typical metal construction materials. Originally used as headquarters for one of many United States aviator training posts during World War II, the hangar is in beautiful condition, despite being the oldest existing aviation-related structure in northwest Arkansas.
Inside this historic hangar, the Arkansas Air & Military Museum presents the colorful and exciting history of aviation in Arkansas as well as American military conflicts through carefully curated exhibits of original artifacts and aviation memorabilia.
Another fascinating and unique facet of the museum is that, unlike other aviation collections, most of the planes in the Arkansas Air & Military Museum collection are still airworthy. The museum houses many aircraft, including Vietnam-era Army helicopters, a Navy carrier fighter, World War I biplane replicas, and even a Lear Jet!
The museum also holds 15 military vehicles, including a classic Willys Jeep, a WWII WC-54 Ambulance, a 2 1/2-ton 6×6 cargo truck used in Desert Storm, and a British Ferret light armored scout car. Some of the military artifacts on display include a Civil War tent stove, German daggers from WWII, flight uniforms, and more.
